What's in store at the NEC MT Awards
I he shortlist tor the Fleet Truck and Fleet Van of the Year categories at the Motor Transport Awards will be unveiled at the show.
A panel of independent judges, drawn from the cream of UK road transport, selected the shortlists for these two prestigious accolades in March, and they will be revealed on CM's stand on the first day of the show "Fleet Truck and Fleet Van of the Year are two of the most eagerly anticipated categories at the MT Awards," says MIeditor Steve Hobson. "It will create a real buzz at the show when we unveil the shordists."
The finalists will be revealed by Fleet Truck sponsor BP and Fleet Van sponsor Commercial Motor at llam on 13 April on stand 5225.
Logistics showcase
This is an inaugural event, run by the Freight Transport Association, celebrating the contribution to UK plc by the transport and logistics industry.
It takes place at the Hilton Metropole. next door to the NEC, on Tuesday 13 April.
The evening will be introduced by BBC newsreader Kate Silverton (pictured below). The highlight of the event will be the premiere of four short films, commissioned by the FTA, that extol the theme of the night: 'love logistics'.

X.2i11lii Dinner served and films shown 1:1111 Carriages The irtec Awards On 13 April, the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) will host an awards ceremony on its stand (5750 in Hall 5) to recognise the achievements of 14 technicians who recently passed the h-tee licence test.
Pioneered by the 1RTE, irtec is the recognised safety and competence qualification in the maintenance and repair of commercial vehicles.
The awards will recognise a winner and runner-up from each of the irtec assessment centres nationwide.
In addition to the unveiling of the winners from the assesment centres, there will also be one ultimate winner announced. Chris Grime, the president of the Society of Operations Engineers will speak at the event, as will SOE Patron John Kateliff CBE. Van Freight Best Practice Guide Free advice on how to get the best out of a van will be on offer at t CV Operator Show from the Department for Transport's Van Bes Practice programme. The programme. which will be found on stand 5568, is launching a new guide at the show.
(Continued on page 40) The guide will offer advice on how to select the best van for a particular job, as well as how to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact.
The programme manager, Larry Martindale, says: "The CV Operator Show is one of the highlights of the motoring calendar and will be well attended by the industry, so we're looking forward to meeting van drivers and fleet managers on the stand:'
The new Sale Vans guide covers speed. journey planning. vehicle maintenance, monitoring and recording incidents, safe driving policies and driver safety training.
'Iwo supporting packs are on fuel management and driver essentials. which include information on van speed limits, driving hours and vehicle checks.
New vans
No fewer than five new vans will make their public debut at the show. Leading the way is the current International Van of the Year. the new Nissan NV200 (on stand 5540), the first van to be designed and produced in-house by the company. Targeting the likes of Volkswagen's Caddy Maxi and Ford's Transit Connect LW13. the new Nissan is expertly packaged, and combines
a competitive load volume of 4.2m3with a payload of 725kg.
The vehicle comes in two grades — E and SE — and is powered by a I.5dCi engine that produces 85hp and a 106hp, and is mated to a live-speed manual transmission. There's also been particular attention paid to the cabin, with no less than 13 storage areas provided.
Nissan is hoping to build on the enthusiastic reaction so far to this new addition to its commercial vehicle range at the show.
Also looking to steal the headlines are the latest jointly developed Renault Master (on stand 5761) and Vauxhall Movano (on stand 5710) vans. Boasting improved productivity and ownership credentials thanks to a 40% cut in maintenance costs. together with a 10% improvement in fuel consumption, it's now available up to 4.5-tonnes GVW.
Fiat Professional will have its entire LCV product range on display. with all eyes expected to he on its new groundbreaking Doblo Cargo van.
With a class-leading payload and load volume of 1.000kg and 4.2m respectively, it comes with the second-generation Furo-5 Multijet engines from Fiat Powertrain, reduced servicing intervals and class-leading standard equipment, including fuel saving engine stop start technology. And with service intervals of 20,000 miles for the Euro-5 versions, the new Fiat has been designed to cut operating costs significantly.
In addition, local dealer Guest Trucks will be hosting Iveco's presence, including the latest Daily and EcoDaily models. •
