FOR the first time in election history in Leeds

and district, Leeds City Transport took over arrangements for the collection of ballot boxes from 197 polling stations in the General Election.

The buses were used to collect presiding officers, ballot boxes and police from polling stations. They were equipped with radio-telephone and were in touch not only with the transport department's control room in Swinegate, but also with a mobile patrol sited outside the Town Hall, Leeds, where the main count took place.

The fleet was supplemented by transport belonging to other Corporation departments in Leeds and some private transport.
