We record with regret the deaths of Jim Carlin, William McCrae, George Porter and Joel Wharton.

Mr McCrae, 53, was managing director of his own firm, Scottish Auto Supplies, and joined the RTITB in 1968 becoming training officer for the East of Scotland in 1971.

Mr Porter, 83, for many years was on the board of the former Ulster Transport Authority.

Mr Jim Carlin, OBE, DFC. 57, was director of administration and secretary to the Road Transport Industry Training Board. Mr Carlin was, in fact, the Board's first employee, having been seconded from the Department of Employment in 1966. He served in the RAF in the Second World War and was awarded the DFC for outstanding bravery.

Mr Wharton, 76, who died in Chesterfield Royal Hospital, started in haulage with horsedrawn vehicles and was a contractor for more than 50 years until his retirement 11 years ago.
