LATEST MOVE IN MACSHANE'S CONTROVERSY.

ANOTHER phase has been reached in the Bootle bus controversy. Recently the Minister of Transport proposed that the service of MaeShane's Motor Services, Ltd., should be superseded, on October 3, by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. That arrangement, however, has not matured.

Representatives of the Bootle Corporation, which itself is promoting a Bill to enable it to operate its own passenger transport, have waited on the Ministry to point out what would happen if the Ribble Co.'s agreement with Liverpool Corporation were made effective and have outlined anomalies in fares and mentioned the question of routes. The mayor of Bootle is now being asked to convene another town's meeting, with a view to circularizing the Prime Minister and all the Members of Parliament on the Bootle transport situation. A public meeting with that object was held at Bootle on Monday evening, October 3.

BIG CO-ORDINATION MOVE.

IN important step in the co-ordination of bus services in South Wales has been effected at Swansea.

On the Swansea-Bishopston (Gower) route, the rival services, the Swan Motor Co., Ltd., and the South Wales Transport Co., Ltd. have, with the assent of the South Wales Traffic Commissioners, arranged to cover the route without wasteful competition.

The South Wktles Transport Co., Ltd., will withdraw from the route in the winter months and, in the summer, the route will be covered by a service run jointly by both companies. COACH AND SEA TOUR.

A. NEW departure has been made by

that enterprising concern, Red and White Services, Ltd., Chepstow, Mon., which has arranged two combined coach and sea tours from London, one being to Gibraltar, Morocco and South Spain, and the other to Gibraltar and Morocco. In each case the price is 16 guineas, and the s.s. "Orford" will leave London on October 29 and November 12. A tour is at present in progress.

NEW EAST KENT SERVICE?

THE East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd.,

has applied to the South-Eastern Traffic. Commissioners for a new, bus service between Sea View Road and Hampton Pier.

M.H.C.S.A. URGE TO OPERATORS.

CONTINUED efforts havebeen made by the Motor Hirers and Coach Services Association, Ltd., to persuade operators to co-operate in combating the present difficult circumstances. Mr. P. W. Walker, the secretary (whose office is at Belgrave House, 17, Euston Road, London, N.W.1), has sent a letter to operators reviewing recent events and outlining changes in the attitude of the Minister of Transport, consequent upon steps taken by the association and others.

Operators are urged to place their hardships before their local Members of Parliament and before the association. They are also requested to attend and support, in every way, future meetings of the Regional Fares Committees, especially in view of the intensive fares cutting on the part of the .railway companies since road operators' fares were agreed.

IMPORTANT PRONOUNCEMENT ON MYSTERY TOURS.

THE chairman of the Western Traffic Commissioners, Mr. A. F. Nicholson, recently made an important pronouncement in connection with mystery tours.

He said that it was quite regular for an operator to advertise a mystery tour and then run one of the scheduled excursions and tours for which he was licensed. It had, however, been found that, in some cases, scheduled routes were not complied with, and a much longer distance was covered.

Mr. Nicholson also referred to a class of lottery whereby certain passengers were awarded gifts, whilst some persons obtained free trips. He pointed out that this VMS quite irregular, and he intimated that, should evidence of such Practices be obtained, the Commissioners will consider prosecution and the revocation of the licences.

LINCOLN PROTECTION UPHELD.

AN application by the Lincolnshire Road Car Co., Ltd., to run buses along Yarborough Road and Longdales Road, Lincoln, has been refused by the East Midland Traffic Commissioners.

Lincoln Corporation has a monopoly in the city, and it will be remembered that its recent application for permission to operate outside its boundaries was refused.

CHESTER ECONOMIZING.

CHESTER Corporation is to seek sanction from the Traffic Commissioners for revised time-tables, the general manager having reported upon the reduction of running costs that could be effected by the curtailment of certain services during the winter. SOUTH WALES ASSOCIATION AND INCREASED FARES. THE question of the increased price of petrol and its effect upon the South Wales bus business was considered at a meeting of the Motor Omnibus Proprietors Association, at Cardiff, on September 29.

The meeting was well attended, and Mr. H. M. Davies (Abercynon), the chairman of the association, presided. The meeting was strongly of the opinion that no general increase in fares could be passed on to the public, but it was resolved that certain increases should be made to eliminate anomalies, where practicable. It was also felt that employees should be called upon to make some sacrifice in view of the existing circumstances.

NEW LONG-DISTANCE-SERVICE ARRANGEMENT.

WE are notified by the General Travel Agency, 16, Eccleston Street, London, SAVA, that the winter programmes of Red and White Services, Ltd., Great Western Express Co., Ltd., and Samuelson Saloon Coaches are now in force.

The 8 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. Red and White services from London to South Wales have been cancelled. All services of the Great Western Express Co., Ltd., from London to South Wales remain as before. The 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Samuelson services from London to Birmingham have been cancelled.

RIBBLE APPEALS SUCCEED. THE Minister of Transport has

allowed. the appeal of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., against the variation of special conditions relating to Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham, attached to certain of the company's licences. The company has also been successful in its appeal against the granting of licences to Lancaster and Morecambe Corporations to run en certain routes outside their respective boroughs.

CHELTENHAM BUS CHANGES. THE Cheltenham District Traction Co. is applying to the Western Traffic Commissioners for permission to operate all buses between the L.M.S. Station and the cemetery, via Tivoli and Park Place.

It is also sought to operate the service between Sandy Lane and the Racecourse, direct between these points, and to discontinue the service between High Street and Pilford Road, and to incorporate the High Street, Hatherley portion of this route in the service to be operated from Hatherley to East End.

Application is being made to modify the time-tables of the various services, which, apart from those in the early morning, would generally be restricted to four per hour, instead of six. The watch committee of Cheltenham Corporation has agreed.

TROLLEY-BUSES FOR DOVER. DOVER Town Council is to apply for parliamentary powers to convert the tramways system to trolley-bus working. In the near future, only the River section is to be changed.

MORE BUSES AND 113. FARES WANTED.

puBLIC meetings at Trewyddfa,

Swansea, have resulted in the decision to petition the Traffic Commissioners, at their Swansea sitting to be held in November, to arrange for a bus service c62 to Trewyddfa Craig and Caemawr. Some 1,500 residents have already signed the petition and Swansea Watch Committee's support will be enlisted. The Commissionens will, at the November sitting, also have a request from Cwmamman Urban District Council for the enforcement of penny stages on district bus services. The council has confirmed the tentative decision as to this step.

REVISED FARES FOR ISLE OF WIGHT.

THE Southern -Traffic Commissioners have announced that, following the fares inquiry held recently in Ryde, Isle of Wight, the Southern Vectis Omnibus Co. shall put into operation, with slight modifications, revised fare-tables submitted to the Commissioners.

The question of fares generally in the Isle of Wight will be reviewed early next year.

GLAMORGAN'S TENDERS. GLAMORGAN County Education Committee has extended the period during which tenders for the carriage of school children may be submitted, to October 12. The forms of tender are obtainable, as stated, from the Director of Education, County Hall, Cardiff.

DEARER FARES AT EXETER. THE general manager of Exeter Cor poration's transport undertaking states that the increase in the price of petrol will make it necessary to increase the bus fares. He pointed out that the concession of return tickets at single fares could be discontinued. The transport committee recommends that the increased fares be adopted.

10 M.P.H. FOR BUSES.

THE watch committee of Hereford Corporation has now, at the request of the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., reconsidered its decision refusing permission for Hunderton Road to be used for traffic. it has decided to permit "Midland Red" vehicles to use this road, provided that they do not exceed 10 m.p.h. between Belmont Road and Hunderton.

OMNIBUS SOCIETY WINTER SESSION COMMENCES. THE winter session of the Omnibus Society opens to-day with a meeting, to be held at 7.15 p.m., at the Institute of Marine Engineers, 85-88, Minories, London, E.C.3. A symposium of papers on "Street Transport Throughout Europe" will be read by members, including Messrs. A. Reenauld, B.Sc., C. E. Lee, A.M.Inst.T., W. N. Jackson, M.A., and C. F. Klapper. GREEN LINE SERVICE ALTERATIONS?

THE clerk has reported to the Parlia mentary Committee of Wood Green Urban District Council that, whilst the appeal of the Green Line Coaches, Ltd., against the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner's refusal of a licence for a London-Hertford (via Enfield and Waltham Cross) service had been allowed by the Minister of Transport, there , would probably he some slight variation in the service, as the result of negotiations now taking place between the company and the Minister. A PLEA FOR SPEEDIER SITTINGS.

THE chairman of the North-Western Traffic Commissioners, Mr. W. Chamberlain, has requested all concerned with sittings in his area to co-operate in expediting the hearings. He appealed to applicants and legal representatives to treat cases with a due sense of proportion.

Mr. Chamberlain has also given his opinion concerning return tickets, to the effect that they were justifiable for special events, but not for ordinary journeys. He said he knew of many corporations issuing return tickets on their short-stage bus services, simply because of competition, but they would never issue them on the trams.

"OUTING" CLUBS AND CONTRACT WORE.

WHEN the East Midland Traffic Com missioners sat at Gainsborough, Mr. J. Ii. Stirk, the chairman, made reference to a new development in connection with contract working, this being the formation of " outing " clubs.

_Apparently, these were formed for the benefit of the organizers, and not on behalf of any recognized institution, the object being to canvass passengers to take an outing to the seaside. When the trip had been completed, the club ceased to exist or was, perhaps, reinstated for a similar later occasion.

MORE COMPETITION FOR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE.

CONSIDERABLE development in the way of special services is projected by Aberdare Urban District Council. The council will apply for licences from the Traffic Commissioners for workmen's services from Aberdare to Rhigos, to Pontwalby, to Aberpergwm and to Cwmgwrach; for children's services to Newtown, Mountain Ash and Cefnpennar, as well as seek permission to run tours and excursions all the year round for members and employees of the council.

It is also proposed to operate all the year general tours and excursions to the following places :-13arry, Porthcawl, 'Wye Valley, Mumbles (Swansea), Brecon, Aberystwyth, Tenby and Port Eynon (Gower), etc.

ANOTHER EAST MIDLAND MEETING SHORTLY.

NO definite decision was reached at

the meeting at Nottingham, referred to in last week's issue, of the leading coach and bus operators in the East Midland Area. The conference was held on September 28, and another one will shortly be convened.
