by Trevor Longcroft Pictures by Dick Ross AFTER the first 965 km (600-mile) inspection, the service programme for the Volkswagen van calls for vehicle lubrication at 4,827 km (3,000-mile) intervals and a major service at 9,654 km (6,000-mile) intervals.

The major service is split into two sections: the first is a check of the vehicle's condition using the Volkswagen computerized diagnosis bay, and the second is obligatory maintenance which covers the usual routine items.

CM staff members recently visited the workshops of Dovercourt (Plaistow) Ltd, 259 Plaistow Road, London E15 3EU, to monitor a major service to a typical Volkswagen commercial. Although the vehicle odometer read 51,488 km (32,000 miles) it had been booked in for a 57,924 km (3,600-mile) service.

The computer diagnosis covers 88 separate items, from the assessment of brake pedal travel to the reading of engine cylinder pressures. Of the 88 checks, 28 are automatically read by the computer; the remainder are go/no-go readings fed in by the fitter who physically checks the item and selects the required response on his computerlinked wandering hand control.

The automatic readings are trans mitted via an umbilical cord, plugged into a special socke engine compartment.
