Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRIALS of double bottoms under operating conditions will be possible as the result of Regulations coming into force on April 1. The Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations 1975, SI 186, replaces the existing provisions of Section 65 of the Road Traffic Act 1972, but it does not alter the number permissible. Its may be drawn.

It does allow the Minister to permit, by administrative Order, the use of new vehicle combinations on the road.

The double bottom is not legal at present because the motor vehicle would be drawing trailers in excess of the number permissable. Its road trials would need special Ministerial permission which, says the DoE, will be given only if the Minister is satisfied as to safety and environmental requirements.

The new Regulations cost 4p from HM Stationery Office or through any bookseller.
