The Newcastle Corporation Town Improvement and Streets Committee .recommend s the Newcastle City Council to purchase additional.mechanically 'driven vehicles, at the total cost of 112,000, for use by the City Engineer's Department. It is estimated that 33
• horses would be dispensed with by these
vehicles. In the opinion of the City Engineer -the whole of the reduction should be made in the hired section, although the step would eventually occasion hardship on a considerable number of contractors.
