Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Sisu hydrostatic wheel-motor system has been applied to the rear axle of a Weeks eight-wheeled pole trailer by H. and S. (Fluicon) Ltd., Hycon Works, Julian Road, Wincobank, Sheffield, to provide extra traction on rough terrain. The trailer is hauled by a County four-wheel-drive tractor produced by County Commercial Cars Ltd., Fleet, Hants, and has a gross weight of 14 tons. The tractor has a weight of five tons.

The wheel motors are of the radialpiston type and are produced by the Sisu company of Finland. A trailer equipped with Sisu motors was displayed at the Geneva Show and was mentioned in the Show report published in CM March 22. Hydraulic power is provided by a pump driven from the front end of the tractor power unit and output of the pump is controlled by valves. The wheel motors can be used to provide traction when the tractor is operating in second or third gear (low ratio) or in reverse (high ratio).

The starting torque available from both motors is 15,000 lb.ft. and the combination can be driven with the wheel motors operative up to speeds of 1.74 mph in first gear, 2.16 mph in second gear and 2.47 mph in reverse. Overall length of the tractor and trailer is 55ft while the wheelbase of the trailer can be varied between 19ft and 28ft.
