GRANTING an interim interdict against the proposal of the Railway Executive to close certain stations and passenger services north of Fife, the Court of Session at Edinburgh, last week, upheld the claim of local authorities and residents that ' the Executive was bound to provide reasonable services.
Lord Blades, granting the injunction. stated that nationalized bodies could not take the law into their own hands. It was clear that the status quo had to be maintained until matters were put on a proper footing. The position would be considered when the Executive lodged its defence to the action.
The action, brought by Fife County Council, the Burgh of Neburgh and Cupar District Council. as well as by residents in the area, asked the court to declare that the Executive had to provide reasonable railway services for passengers. The line had been in use since 1909, a28 It was stated that representation had been made to the Executive, which refused to reveal the authority under which it could discontinue services. The line was scheduled to close on June 5, and was claimed by the petitioners to serve a large agricultural community and eight villages.
