MR. FRED HOWARTH, of the Paragon (Hull) Motor Co., Ltd., Leeds, has . been elected vice-chairman.

MR. R. H. iltissr, of John Hunt and Sons (Leeds), Ltd., has been re-elected' chairman of the Yorkshire Section of the Institute of Transport, for a second year in that office. The vice-chairmen are MR. E. 13. HlUTCHINSON (Leeds Area Road Haulage Officer, M.O.W.T.), MAJOR F. S. EASTIVOOD (Transport Commissioner, North-eastern Region), -and M. W. VANE MORLAND (general manager and chief engineer, Leeds Passenger Transport Department).

MR. ARTHUR C. RICHARDS, chairman and managing director of the Aero Piston Ring Co., Ltd., Leeds, has been re-elected chairman of the Yorkshire Region of the Institute of the Motor Trade for the third successive year. MR. P. R. BAUGH, of the Lodestar Motor Co., a concern of commercialvehicle specialists specialists of Sheffield, has been elected vice-chairman and re-elected honorary treasurer.

COLONEL J. MONROE JOHNSON, a member of the U.S.A. Interstate Commerce Commission, was recently appointed director, of the Office of Defense Transportation. He takes the place of Mr. Joseph B, Eastman, who died last March. Thus the highest transport position of the American nation is filled by a veteran of the first world war, who is widely known 'for his engineering ability and broad knowledge of transport matters.

ALDERMAN RICHARD MAYNE, chairman of the transport and electricity committee of Newcastle-on-Tyne City Council for 20 years, has resigned. He is 84 years. oldond has been a member of the city council for 40 years. He will retain his membership of :the committee. Under his chairmanship, the committee, a few years ago, embarked on a plan for converting the city's tram routes to operation by trolleybuses and buses. Many routes have already been converted and further change-overs are contemplated so soon as circumstances permit.

MR. B. G. TURNER, _M.Inst.T.,' who has been elected president of the London and Home Counties Haulage Contractors' Association, has been a member of the Council of that body since 1933. He is also a Council member of the National Road Transport Employers' Federation, and a member of the S.J.C. (and its executive and other sub-committees). A list of his membership of other 'bodies is too long to include here, but :in his business capacity it should be mentioned that

he is managing director of Thomas Allen, Ltd„ and of other haulage and engineering concerns. His brother, the late, Mr. P. R. Turner, was president of the Association from 1926 until his death in 1932.

MR. DUDLEY NOHLE relinquished his appointment with Rootes Securities, Ltd., a little while ago, and has now launched into a personal business in connection with technical journalism, public relations and editorial services. He tells us that he has already established contact with important organizations closely identified with the motor and allied industries, in which he has had 25 years' experience. MR. A. R. SADLER has been elected to the hoard of directors of Pirelli, Ltd., and appointed a managing director of "the company. MR. 3. E. PERUvAL, chairman of the board, is also appointed a managing director. Mr. Sadler has been associated with the tyre industry since 1915. He is a member of the Council of the S.M.M.T., on which he has served for many years, and is on the Council of the Federation of British Rubber and Allied Manufacturers' Associations. He joined the Pirelli concern as general sales manager in January, 1929, after having served for many years with the Gbodyear Tyre and Rubber Co.

MR. A. A. SMITH, who has been with Yokes, Ltd., for several years as its chief designer, has been appointed deputy general manager of the company. Assistant chief designers have been appointed in the persons of MR. A. FREEDMAN, A.M.I.MEcit.E., and MR. R. CHAFFEY; the former will take care of production design and the latter of development design. MR. A. W. CULVER, who vacates the position of chief inspector, which is being filled by MR. A. E. G. SLY, returns to his former post of sales manager. The rapid growth of the company's business, ,the diversity of its filtration products and the dispersal of its factories have placed such burdens upon the managing director, MR. C. G.
