WE learn that the Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers is obtaining from large operators in Yorkshire signatures to a memorial against the draft proposals circulated by the Central Wages Board.

The memorial, which is to be forwarded to the Central Board, says examination of the effect which the Central Board draft proposals would have leads to the conclusion that it is impossible to pay the wages and observe the conditions proposed by the Central Board. Whilst, it is added, the wages scales proposed by the Central Board Employers' Panel, together with strict observance of the conditions, will also very considerably increase the wages at present being paid in the industry, the signatories are willing to adhere to these wages and conditions. In a discussion at the meeting at which the memorial was approved, Mr. Robert Barr, of Leeds, chairman of the Federation, said the more one examined the draft proposals circulated by tile Central Board, the more staggering did they become, The position had got beyond the point where it could be left for the associations to deal with. The individual operator must put some effort into opposing these draft proposals. He emphasized that members of the Federation wished to work in complete harmony with the Ministry of Labour on the wages question, referred to the problem presented by the owner-driver from the standpoint of wages control, and described the Central Board Employers' Panel's proposals as affording a fair basis upon which to start a rear stabilization of wages.
