As regards the Gazettes received since last week's issue went to press, according to Gazette No. 15, the Lerwick and Kirkwall sittings of the Northern Scotland Commissioners are likely to be notable as being devoid of objections to applications, despite the fact that some local express-carriage applications will be heard.

Gazette No. 16 of the Southern Scotland Area lists a number of stage carriage applications by Ayr and District Motor Services; Ltd., fer hearing on AllitSth. Ayr Corporation is to be represented in respect of four of them. The decisions in this Gazette include many licences granted to W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd. Three withdrawals are noted, including one by the Midland Bus Services, Ltd., in respect of a stagecarriage service between Castle Douglas and Dairy.

United Automobile Services, Ltd., and L.N.E.R. Co. are objecting to several stage-carriage applications by Messrs. Stephenson Brothers and W. Emmerson, which are to be heard by the Northern Commissioners at Bishop Auckland. Gazette No. 7 for this area announces • backings granted to the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., also a large number of other licences granted.

According to Gazette No. 12 of the Yorkshire Area, strong opposition by the railways will be met, at the hearing commencing July 14th, by the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., and four other companies in respect of their express-carriage applications for the route between Manchester and Hull, also a number of long-distance services between other towns in the North of England. This sitting will no doubt constitute a most important fight between the railway interests and operators of . long-distance coach services. No decisions are announced.

The sitting of the West Midland Commissioners at Shrewsbury, on July 6th,' will be mainly occupied by a large number of applications for stagecarriage services by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., Wellington Urban District Council being represented in respect of several of them. Gazette No. 14 for this area announces the granting of licences to the Midland "Red" company, in respect of its Birmingham-Bournemouth and 'Walsall-Bournemouth express services, and includes backings to a number of this company's stagecarriage licences.

Of the forthcoming East Midland sittings, that fixed for July 14th and subsequent days should prove interesting. The L.G.O. Co., Ltd., and L.M.S. Railway Co. are objecting to the Midland "Red" Birmingham-London appli cations. The Leicester and District Bus Co. will meet considerable railway and other opposition to its express ser vices in the Leicester area. Gazette No. 16 announces the refusal of a backing for the express London-Sheffield application of Premier Coaches and Garage, Ltd., also a number of licence grants, including some to Barton Transport, Ltd., for stage-carriage services. This gazette announces the withdrawal by the Midland " Red " company of two applications in respect of express services between Birmingham and London.

The L.X.E.R. Co. is objecting, on July 14th, to the Cambridge-London and Cambridge-Poole express-service applications of Varsity Express Motors, Ltd., and Varsity Coaches, Ltd. Gazette No. 15 of the Eastern Area lists a few licence grants, including one to the National Omnibus and Transport Co. Ltd., for an express service between Wi:tford and Great Yarmouth.

Gazette No. 12 of the South Wales Area announces the granting of a auraher of stage-carriage licences to Red and White Services, Ltd.

At the Salisbury sitting of the Southern Area Commissioners, Messrs. Sparrow and Vincent are objecting to several stage-carriage applications by Wilts: and Dorset Motor Services, Ltd. Gazette No. 15 includes a number of lieence grants, mainly in respect of stage services. Elliott Brothers (Bournemouth), Ltd.,Reith•and Boyle, Ltd., and Orange Motor Coaches (Dover), Ltd., are some of the applicants • to be heard at the

South-Eastern Area. sitting, coinniencing 'July 13th, when 'express-ser

vice licences will be considered. The usual London-coastal routes figure prominently, with an objection in almost every. case by the Southern Railway. Gazette No. 16 includes a few licence grants.

At the Metropolitan Areasitting, commencing July 13th, there is a large • number of railway and other objections to London-coastal applications, as well as to licences for excursions. Gazette No. 16 includes licences granted for race-meeting excursions, also several refusals.
