The text hes been issued of a Bill to confirm the provisional Order made by the Minister of Transport, under the Wallasey Corporation Act, 1927, in regard to trolley-buses in the area in question. It is estimated that the cost of the change from trains to trolleybuses will be about £181,000.

Standardization Not Favoured.

A special committee of Stoke-onTrent Corporation has decided not to recommend the establishment of a central municipal garage and repair depot. The committee is in favour of records of repair costs being kept by each department, a quarterly statement being submitted to the committee concerned. The standardization of types of vehicle is not recommended. " Safety" Bonus for Staff.

The Glasgow municipal transport department grants a bonus of £1 to each driver and conductor attached to the garage showing the lowest percentage of accidents during the year. This sum is paid only to employees who have been attached to the garage in question for a full year.

Appointment of Agents in Holland.

The Department of Overseas Trade, 35, Old Queen Street, London, S.W.1, has issued a memorandum to concerns on its special register regarding methods of trading, terms of payment and appointment of agents in the Netherlands. Reference OX. 3575 should be quoted. Concerns wishing to obtain information relative to the Special Register service should apply to the Department.

New Insurance Association.

Underwriters at Lloyd's who transact the insurance of motor vehicles have decided to establish an association operating on the same lines as those dealing with marine and non-marine business. This body will form a centre for deciding questions of policy, the drafting of clauses and the making of agreements. It will not be concerned with the actual transaction of business between underwriters and their insured.

Thornyeroft Braking System.

As the resultaif incorrect information given to us it was stated, in our issue dated June 23rd, in regard to a new tiviae of Thornycroft double-deck bus chassis, that this had Dewaudre vacuum brake equipment. Actually Westinghouse vacuum equipment is fitted in this case, the Westinghouse make being standardized by the Thornycroft concern.

Removing Source of Danger.

Owing to the abolition of trams on the route between Farowerth and Pendlebtery, the tram standards, which for 29 years have been a feature of this road, will be removed. Their presence along the centre of the highway has been a constant source of trouble to drivers.

Metallurgical Matters.

The 45th volume of the Journal of the Institute of Metals has just been published. It contains 442 pages and 59 plates. It is priced at 31s. 6d., and is edited by Mr. G. Shaw Scott, M.Sc. This is the first of the aeries of volumes to be produced without abstracts. This procedure has enabled earlier publication to be made.

Authors' replies to criticisms of their papers are included, thus enhancing the value of the work. The subjects include rolling copper, extrusion of metals, much data relative to corrosion, and various semi-historical discourses.

Bristol Tramways Standards.

Following reprehentations made to Bristol Corporation by the Automobile Association, it has been decided to paint the bases of all central tramway standards with black and yellow bands to make them conspicuous.

Substituting Buses for Trams.

The Yorkshire (Woollen District) Transport Bill has been reported to the Rouse of Commons by the Select Committee on Unopposed Bills, foa a third reading. In the main this measure provides for the ultimate scrapping of the tramways worked by the promoters and for the substitution of buses.

A Reference Book of Chassis Specifications.

The 1931 edition of " The Commercial Motor Index" has just been published, price Us.' by Fletcher and Son, Ltd.,. Castle Works, Norwich. It gives eondeneed specifications of chassis made by a, large number of manufacturers, these being grouped so as to show models made in each year from 1920 until the present time. The sections include details of commercial. vehicles having petrol engines, steam engines and those which are electrically propelled. One section covers tractors and self-propelled agricultural appliances, whilst the final portion deals with taxicab chassis.

Protecting Regular-route Operators • Against Excursion Services.

• A point for coach owners who, in the South Wales area, are licensed to run tours to various resorts was made by the South Wales Traffic Commissioners sitting at' Newport at the end of June. Mr. A. T. James, K.C., the chairman, said the Commissioners aimed at affording full protection to regularservice proprietors from trespass by operators licensed for excursions and tours. To that end he warned tourlicence holders that they were being watched to see that the tours were not run to the prejudice of the regular bus services and in such a manner that they became, in effect, regular services to resorts and popular centres.
