SUMMONED for permitting a lorry to be used with a defective tyre and without a carrier's licence, Harris Williant Winstanley, a Rochdale haulier and a local magistrate, told the county magistrates that the action of the police in taking hint to court was "mean and despicable."

" It is ridiculous," Mr. Winstanley said, "to bring a case to court for this kind of offence."

He said that the tyre was faulty, but not dangerous. Although he was "technically guilty" of using the lorry without a carrier's licence, he was merely transferring the licence from one vehicle to another and was not defrauding the Inland Revenue.

After the magistrates had examined the tyre, Winstanley was fined £2 for each offence.
