Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Id. and lid. fares on services operated by the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., are likely to be restored

, within the next few months. Negotiations are now taking place between the company and the local authorities concerning Id. and lid. fare stages on services which have been introduced or modified since the war.

The Id. and lid. fares were increased to lid. and 2d., respectively, early in 1940 to compensate for a loss of revenue through war-time evacuation. Later in the same year, an upward revision was made in other sections of the fares table, but on the instructions of the Licensing Authority the second block of increaseg was removed in 1944.

Now, the Licensing Authority has expressed the view that the revenue position of the company has improved sufficiently to allow the restoration of the old Id. and lid. fares. It is understood that "East Kent" has no objection to this and the return of these fares will undoubtedly be authorized as soon as the company and the local authorities have agreed on the stages to which the Id. and lid. fares should apply.

THE UGLY GAP THE "ugly gap" between road and 1 rail passenger fares between Nottingham and Leicester was referred to by the representative of the Railway Executive at a recent sitting of the East Midland Licensing Authority.

Barton Transport, Ltd., Beeston, Notts, was granted permission to increase the frequency of its NottinghamLeicester service from hourly to halfhourly. For the Railway Executive, it was stated that the bus fare was 3s. and the railway fare 4s. 11d., and the falling off in railway passenger traffic between these two towns was ascribed to road competition. If road competition were not curbed, said the R.E. representative, the stage might be reached where it would not be practicable to run a rail service between Nottingham and Leicester.

Granting the application, the Licensing Authority pointed out that it seemed there was a great desire on the part of the public to travel by road.. He did not look favourably upon excessive duplication.

SPAIN EASES IMPORTS BRITISH manufacturers of commercial vehicles are encouraged by a change in the Spanish exchange rate, which has been made by the revision of a trade agreement concluded early last year. Hitherto, the standard rate has been 44 pesetas to the £ sterling for all except tourists. Now the rate has been tapered according to the urgency of the need for various kinds of industrial import. The rate for goods vehicles and buses is 88.26 pesetas to the £. Other rates are 70.605 for railway material, 79.43 for civil aircraft and machinery for thcproduction and distribution of electricity, and 97.08 for motorcars, motorcycles and spare parts.

The internal value of the peseta is about 100 to the £.
