The demonstrations were made in a Lay-by at Kingsdown on the A20 LondonMaidstone road. Vehicles were waved down in the usual way for weighing and the platform, which measures about 8. ft. 6 in. wide by 6 ft. long (suitable for
weighing two-axle bogies), used to find individual axle loadings from which the gross weight could be obtained. No vehicles checked during the demonstration were found to be above the gross legal weight but one had a rear axle loading of 9 ton 8 cwt.
Mr. Nuttall, head of Kent County Council weights and Measures department who has been using the equipment experimentally for about six months said that action Would not be taken on this small margin of overload unless the operator persistently overloaded. He said that between 10 and 15 per cent of vehicles stopped were found to be overloaded.
