According to this year's analysis by The Commercial Motor, seven of the eight undertakings still operating trams at this time last year have abandoned another 1,023 of them and placed 467 more buses in service. The overall advance in the number of buses was only 361, representing an increase of 2 per

cent. , During 1955, the 0.98 per cent. increase in the total fleet strength was also accounted for by tram abandonment.

The rise in the number of doubledeck buses confirms that demands for new services are generally being met without increasing overall vehic1e strengths. Last year there were 16,669 double-deckers; today the figure is 17,075. The number of single-deckers has dropped by 45 to 1298.

Oil-engined vehicles continue to increase at the expense of petroldriven buses. In the past year, the number of oil-engined buses has risen by 452 to 16,074. Petrolengined vehicles have de-creased by 22 to 98.

Trolleybuses have continued to fall from favour, a further 69 having been withdrawn. There are now only 2,201 trolleybuses operated by municipalities.

Leyland has retained its lead as the most popular make of motorbus, the -number rising in the past year by 305 to 5,052. The number of ER

A.E.C.s advanced by 291 to 3,;i3.2. Daimler is still in second place with 4,246 motorbuses. The last Thornycrofts in municipal service were withdrawn during the year.

Undertakings still running trams are those at Aberdeen, which has 40(64 in 1955); Blackpool, 159 (159); Glasgow, 390 (1,024); Leeds, 170 (253); Liverpool, 118 (125); and Sheffield, 291 (348). Dundee Transport Department, which had 55 trams a year ago, and the Edinburgh undertaking, which then ran 163 trams, now operate motorbuses on!y.
