Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE have received advance particulars of an interesting new vehicle being manufactured by G. Scammell and Nephew, Ltd., Fashion Street, London, E.1, which is now in course of coinpleting its tests. The machine, of the forward-control class, has been constructed to carry a load of five tons, and, we are informed, is capable of a maximum speed of 40 m.p.h. when fully

loaded. The unladen weight of the complete vehicle with platform body will, it is anticipated, permit a legal speed of 30 m.p.h.

The engine and gearbox are built on the unit-construction principle, the former being a Meadows type 4EL and the latter a type 9 four-speed unit. The engine has a bore and stroke of 90 mm. and 130 mm. respectively, and has magneto ignition, whilst a selfstarter and dynamo are provided and the cooling water is circulated by pump. The unit develops 45 b.h:p. at 2,200 r.p.m., the maximum road speed being 40 m.p.h., whilst the normal cruising speed is 25-30 m.p.h.

The clutch is of the single-plate type. The propeller shaft is of the open pattern, equipped with Hardy Spicer couplings at both front and rear, and it carries the drive to a Kirkstall offset worm-driven rear axle, optional ratios of 51to 1, 5* to I, 6i to 1 and 71 to 1 being available.

The brakes are of the Lockheed hydraulic type, 15-in, diameter drums being used, the aluminium-alloy brake shoes being faced with die-pressed Verodo. The steering is by Cam Gears, Ltd. Semi-elliptic springs are used all

round, the leaves being long and wide ; the shackles are fitted with Silentbloc bushes.

The vehicle has a track of 5 ft. 7 ins. at the front and 5 ft. 5fr ins, at the rear, its wheelbase being 8 ft. 10i ins. It is shod with pneumatic tyres of 27-in. by 6-in, dimensions, twin equipment being used on the rear wheels.
