A TRACTIVE unit designed for a gross train weight ot 18 tons is included in the standard range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles now available in this country. It is the LPS.322/32 MR 8-ft, 6-in.-wheelbase model with Daimler-Benz OM 321 diesel engine, giving an output of 110 b.h.p. Alternatively the OM 322 engine is available.

The gearbox is a Daimler-Benz five-speed synchromesh unit, driving to a hypoid, spiral-bevel rear axle. Single-line, airassisted hydraulic brakes are fitted to the tractive unit with twin-line, full-air brakes to the semi-trailer. The standard coupling is an S.A.E. fifth-wheel type, and the unladen weight of tractive unit with standard cab is 3 tons 1 cwt.

An all-steel cab is fitted, and the driving position is forward control, Maximum length of semi-trailer is 26 ft.

Alternatively a semi-forward-control model (LS 322/32R) with 10-ft. 6-in, wheelbase can be supplied. All particulars are as above apart from the unladen weight which is increased by one cwt. and the maximum possible length of semi-trailer which is reduced to 24 ft.

OF the four basic models made by this firm, two come into the 15-18-ton range. These are the 16-4-354 and 18-4-370, giving a gross train weight of 16 and 18 tons respectively.

The smaller model has a six-cylinder, 5.8-litre diesel engine and five-speed, constant-mesh gearbox. A 6.07-litre engine is lilted in the heavier model, and there is a choice of fiveor six-speed, constant-mesh gearbox.

Common to both models are the vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes, with air-pressure brakes an optional extra. Similarly, there is a choice of rear axle with spiral-bevel drive as standard, or a two-speed axle as optional extra equipment.

The above models have a fifth-wheel coupling, but an automatic coupling is available as an alternative, when the models become I6-4-A354 and 18-4-A370 respectively.

The unladen weight of the 16-ton model with standard cab is 3 tons 6 cwt. when fitted with a. spiral-bevel axle—and a twospeed axle increases the weight by I cwt. The 18-ton model weighs 3 tons 9 cwt. with standard -axle, and a two-speed axle again increases the weight by 1 cwt. If an automatic coupling is fitted, the weight is reduced by 2 cwt. in each case.
