WE are indebted to the journal Oil, Engine Power for detalls of a new Caterpillar tractor equipped with a Diesel engine.

There has been a tendency in the past for American designers to look to EuroPearl sources for pioneer developments in the application of the heavy-oil engine. It is claimed that this has been mainly due to the fact that the price of petrol has been reasonable enough to keep asers fairly well satisfied with their fuel costs, whcreas in Europe the comparatively high cost of petrol has helped to foster the application of Diesel power, but now the mechanical limitations of the petrol machine have supplied the additional urge necessary to promote the employment of -r.,tte oil engine for heavier classes of equipment, such as the power shovel and the heavy tractor.

The unit fitted into the new Cater pillar tractor develops 75 b.h.p. at 650 r.p.m. It has four cylinders of 61-in. bore and 81-in. stroke. Special attention has been paid to the protection of moving parts from abrasive dust, the rocker arms, valve tappets and oilspraying valves being entirely enclosed, likewise Purolator oil filters have been adopted to protect the bearings and the air is filtered by a Protectomotor.
