Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Leyland, Lancashire — the hostel where Leyland Motors student apprentices stayed — will meet for a reunion.

The law-abiding gentlefolk of Leyland town can rest safely in their beds, however, for the event will be held in Blackpool instead.

"Holding it there means that no-one will end up being tied to the Leyland Cross overnight," an enthusiast assures me.

Any interested former apprentices should phone John Patterson on (0772) 421400, ext 5031.

• Globetrotting children's nurse Sylvia Maya11 from Manchester, who aims to drive round the world to raise money for disabled British kids, wants help from hauliers to solve her insurance problems.

MayaII sets out next March and is having trouble getting her 1984 Toyota 4WD Tercel insured at a reasonable rate. The best deal she can find is a 5,000 offer for a car worth just £4,000 and the charity backing her — the Sylvia Mayan Trust — does not have that kind of money.

"I wonder if any intematiorg hauliers, who are obviously well versed in insurance matters overseas, could offer me any advice?" she asks.

Mayall, whose fund-raising expedition will take her through 37 countries, can be reached at the Sylvia Maya Trust, PO Box 88, Radcliffe, Manchester if anyone can help.

• North Bedfordshire Council likes to lead the pack by starting something before anybody else does.

It was therefore no surprise to the people of Bedford when they saw the gritting lorries out at the end of August.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in the city centre as the gritters gritted under the warmth of the lunchtime sun. Some mistake, surely!

In fact there was a sadly mundane explanation for this Twilight Zone behaviour. Diesel had been spilt on the road making the surface treacherous.
