TO extend their ferry activities between
Britain aid Ireland, British Road Services have acquired a controlling interest in Anglo-Continental Container Services (London), Ltd., and Anglo-Continental Container Services (Belfast), Ltd. These companies operate container services between Preston and Ardrossan and Larne (Northern Ireland). A B.R.S. spokesman told The Commercial Motor on Tuesday: "It is confidently expected that this will result in more comprehensive services between the two countries. It will be of mutual advantage to traders on both sides."
AIR-COOLED ENGINE IN NEW TRUCK
A NEW type of cross-country vehicle 1.--‘ which may be used for carrying either goods or passengers is to be made for the U.S. Army by Willys Motors, Inc., Toledo, Ohio. Rated as a 15-cwt. outfit, it is a development of the Mechanical Mule 10-cwt. weapons carrier in current production. It has forward control. Thevehicle has folding seats for five passengers. When these are collapsed, a load platform is formed and its height earl he adjusted. The four-cylindered air-cooled engine is mounted beneath the platform and drives all four wheels, each of which is independently sprung. Either two or all wheels may be steered. The windscreen is removable, and the vehicle lends itself to air transport because of its light weight.
LICENCE CONDITIONS BROKEN
FINES totalling £19 were imposed upon Alfred Rae, -Ltd., Longside Lane, Bradford, at Bradford last week for failing to comply with their B-licence conditions, failing to cause records to be kept, and allowing a driver to work longer than 11 hours a day. The driver concerned was fined £8 for contravening the law on hours and records. It was stated in defence that the concerti were engaged in a highly competitive business and had succumbed to temptation.
L.T.E. SACRIFICE RIGHTS
QNE-MAN buses will be used by Banstead Coaches, Banstead, Surrey, if the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner allows them to operate a new service linking Woodmansterne and Banstead Station. The London Transport Executive have agreed not to oppose the application, as all their vehicles are too big for the proposed route.
• 135,000 IN THE RED
AN accumulated deficit of about £35,000 at the end of the current financial year is faced by Southport Transport Department. The present deficit is £28.000, carried forward from last year, and the loss on the current year's working is estimated to be approximately £7,000.
