A TRUCK DRIVER who ploughed into the back of stationary traffic and killed a mother of two has been jailed for two and a half years for causing death by dangerous driving.
Leslie Davidson initially told police that he didn't see signs warning drivers to slow down or the traffic waiting ahead of him to turn off at J44 of the Ml last September. He said he thought that he might have been distracted by a fly or a wasp in his cab.
David Dixon, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court it had not been ruled out that Davidson might have been distracted by a cigarette or the radio.
Davidson's tacho records showed he had only swerved and braked at the last minute before hitting a car driven by Nicola Walker from Barwick-inEimet near Leeds. Vehicles were shunted into one another as the truck ploughed into them.
Another truck driver on the motorway at the time of the smash told the court how he changed lanes to enable Davidson to pull out and avoid the queue. When Davidson did nothing he could see that a collision was looming. Davidson expressed his remorse but could not explain why he had failed to see the traffic.
• The Crown Prosecution Service says that it will be reviewing the way it prosecutes cases of causing death by dangerous driving in the light of the new offence of causing death by careless driving.
