Side-valve Engine Used in Interesting Addition to Morris-Commercial Range DOWERED By a. 25 1 h.p. four-cylindered petrol engine, and having, it is claimed, the longest body length in its class, Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., announces the introduction of a new 5-ton forwardcontrol machine as an addition to its range e vehicles.

The cylinder dimensions are 100 mm. by 112 mm., the cubic capacity being 3,519 c.c., with an R.A.C. rating of 24.8 h.p.; at 2,850 r.p.m., the b.h.p. is 70, and the maximum torque 1,850 lb./ins. The comPression ratio is 5.65 to 1.

It has side valves, austenitic cylinder liners, a three-bearing crankshaft, and a camshaft driven by a duplex roller chain. The crankshaft bearings are of the white-metal-lined, steel-backed type, whilst in the case of the connecting rods the white metal is bonded direct on to the rod and cap.

Ass A.C. fuel pump, which receives • its drive from the camshaft, raises the petrol from a 20-gallon tank, to the Solex carburetter.

From the engine, the drive is taken through an 11-inadiameter Borg and Beck single dry-plate clutch, .having a spring-drive centre' plate, to a fourspeed-and-reverse gearbox, with provision for a power take-off on the off side.

The gearbox ratios are 6.612, 3.389, 1436, and 1 to 1, with a 7.852-to-1 reverse; a ratio of 7.57 to 1 is provided in the spiral-bevel-driven rear axle. A two-piece propeller shaft takes the drive to the rear axle, the front member being tubular, with a Layrub universal joint behind the gearbox, the centre bearing being rubber-mounted on a frame crossmember.

A Hardy-Spicer shaft, with needleroller-type joint, runs from the centre bearing to the rear axle, the shaft having' a sliding joint at its forward end.

Progressive-type semi-elliptic springs are used, those at the front being 351 ins, long and 21 ins, wide, and those at the rear 50 ins. by 21 ins, wide. Steel disc wheels, baying eight-stud fixings, carry 34-in. by 7-in. R.H.S. tyres.

Tiere are. five cross-members bracing the pressed-steel,. channel-section frame, which is reinforced by triangulated cross-bracing. The Lockheed hydraulic System is responsible for operating the Girling two-leading-shoe type brakes fitted to all :wheels; the hand-brake lever, as. is usual, is connected to only the rear-wheel brakes.

This new 5-tonner has a net chassis weight of approximately 351 cwt., the cab adding about another 31 cwt. The maximum permissible gross laden weight is 8 tons.

The following are the leading general dimensions:—.Wheelbase, 13 ft, 6 ins..; track, front 5 ft. 4* in., rear 5 ft. k ins. (mean); length, overall, 21 ft. 12 ins.; width, overall, 6 ft. 6 ins.; ground clearance, 14 ins, under rear axle.

The platform area of the body is 16 ft. 6 ins. by 6 ft. 6 ins. The total weight being less than 50 cwt., the vehicle. comes within the £30-tax class. As a complete vehicle, with drop-sided' lorry body, the price is £550, or, as a chassis and cab, £500. It should Le mentioned that delivery can be made only against an M.O.W.T. licence to acquire.
