Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Admiral Graf Spec, which• has been so much

in the news of late, is the most recent of the Itree German 10,000-ton "pocket battleships," and, like her sister ships, is almost entirely of welded construction.

This fact is of the utmost significance, because it is claimed that welding instead of riveting in her construction resulted in the saving of anything up to 1,000 tons of steel.

That no concession was made in the matter of strength, but very much the reverse, is proved by her exceptionally heavy main armament, consisting of two triple sets of 11-in, guns, one set forward and the other aft. These represent a combined discharge of about 4,000 lb., the resulting concussion-of which, experts have stated, would shear the rivets and force the plates of a riveted hull.

It is not in shipbuilding alone that welding in place of riveting can bring about great economies in steel. Many

castings are being superseded by welded sheet-steel pressings.

For example, engine crankcases and gearboxes are being produced by such methods, whilst experiments are -being made with a view to extending the practice to cylinder blocks and many other components which, until recently, have been considered the exclusive province of the foundry.

By the even wider application of these methods we should be able to make the most of our steel supplies and so help to conserve our vital national resources.
