FODENS launch their lefthand-drive Universal range of sixand eight-wheelers today at the RAI Show at Amsterdam.

First shown in prototype in 1974, the eight-model range covers operation at weights from 26 tonnes (25.6 tons) gvw to 100 tonnes (98.4 tons) gtw. There is almost total interchangeability of all major components across the range.

Six-wheelers will be in full production in the latter part Df this year and eight-wheelers from the early part of next year. Sales will be aimed at the European market though specialist T1R and other specialist long-haul operators based in the UK will be able to order vehicles from Sandbach.

There are two three-axle rigid models in the range plated to 26 tonnes (25.6 tons) and 36 tonnes (35.4 tons) gvw. Both vehicles can be operated with drawbar trailers to 50 tonnes (49.2 tons) and 60 tonnes (59 tons) gtw respectively. The heavier model carries a designed axle capacity of 40 tonnes (39.4 tons).

Eight-wheelers are plated to 32 tonnes (31.5 tons) and 42 tonnes (41.3 tons) gvw, and 50 tonnes and 60 tonnes (59 tons) gtw respectively.

Completing the range, the three six-wheel tractive units are plated to 45 tonnes (44.3 tons), 60 tonnes and 100 tonnes gcw.

All vehicles are specified with the all-steel S90 tilt cab, which has luxury seating. The cabs have been designed with a special emphasis on noise reduction and meet all current and anticipated EEC Regulations.

Cummins engines are common throughout the range with the NTCE 290 unit being specfled for all but two models. The 290 drives through a Foden eight-speed range change gearbox.

The Cummins NTC 355E engine is fitted to the topweight artic and the heavyduty version of the 42-tonne eight-wheeler. Both vehicles are specified with a torque converter and Foden ninespeed gearbox.
