TANKERS for lubricating oil, for desert burnoffs and to meet proposed hazardous-load legislation provide examples of the increasing specialisation in the oil and chemicals sector of the bulk transport industry.

The three types of operation listed above are represented in recent products of Fergussons (Tankers) Ltd, of Portsmouth, The unusual lubricating oil vehicle was for Esso, a fourcompartment tanker with four separate rear-mounted meters and hosereels—which entailed four separate pumps as well. The desert machine was a Bedford-based 6,364 litres (1,400 gal) tanker—the chassis converted to 6x2—equipped with a wide, rear-mounted spray bar so that waste oil can be sprayed under pressure on to desert roads and the bushes and scrub can be burned off.

The third example was an eight-wheeled acid tanker with grp-lined interior built to meet the proposed legislation for the carriage of hazardous chemicals.

Hazardous-load legislation is also affecting designs in the waste disposal and municipal sectors of the market, into which Fergussons moved last year with the mini-tanker and mini gully emptier on Bedford CF and Reliant Bug chassis. Now the company has categorised its range into mild steel gully and cesspit emptiers, as well as special vehicles for water boards, and the capacities go right up the range. A new 16,375 litre (3.600gal) design for Redland Purle uses a special multi-clip rear door as one of several features to meet the draft hazard-load regulations.

All Fergussons' mild-steel work, including dished and flanged ends and bulkheads, is carried out on the premises, and the company makes its own hosereels. Only pumps and ancillary equipment are bought in.

Output averages a vehicle a day, but the company has an expansionist approach. Says Fergussons director Mr Bill Head; "We feel we have a decent share of the fuel oil and municipal markets—but we have our eyes on a great many other possibilities too."
