£3m. FOR B.T.C. TO MAINTAIN BRIDGES

A CONTRIBUTION of £3m. is to be (.paid by the Government to the British Transport Commission to help them to meet their liabilities for the maintenance of road bridges over railways and level crossings. The amount will be paid as Elm. for the second half of last year and £2m. for this year.

Announcing this on Monday, the Minister of Transport said that the burden of maintenance had become more onerous. Highway authorities also received assistance from the Exchequer for road works. The Government recognized the need to accelerate the modernization of level crossings and road bridges. and would examine more fully the obligations of the B.T.C. in this respect.

The B.T.C. had asked to be relieved of their road liabilities, but this request raised complicated issues.
