TRAVEL BACK IN TRANSPORT HISTORY ▪ Road transport historians have their own national conference next March. The event at Coventry Polytechnic is being held by a new group, the Roads & Road Transport History Group, which says it is an umbrella organisation to promote interest in the subject as a whole. "Road transport history embraces tram, motor and trolley bus services, road haulage and roads themselves. Some aspects are well served by existing societies, but they tend to be pursued independently of each other," it says.

The one-day conference, on Saturday 16 March, will look at late 17th century precursors of modern road haulage and bus operators and road/rail competition for freight. It costs 210 to attend including lunch.
