Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A HEAVY-OIL carburetter of rather unusual design,

which has achieved lately a certain measure of success in France, is the Masson. The special feature of this appliance is the employment of a pre-combustion chamber in which a small proportion of fuel (about 10 per cent, of the total engine consumption) is used in preparing or " cracking " the remainder before it. enters the cylinders.

The design is very simple, as may be seen fr0111 the accompanying sectional diagram. Oil for heating purposes is carried from the float chamber to the burner by' the flame jet, whilst this particular portion of the fuel is ignited and kept burning by a.hot-wire plug.

A supply of air is drawn from the main air intake to the top of the combustion chamber, whilst the main fuel supply is taken straight to the ventttri through a jet of orthodox type. An extremely high temperature is maintained in the combustion chamber, and the gases descending from it into the venturi operate the cracking process upon the oil fuel that enters. An automatic air valve is mounted inthe main ..air :intake, whilst a butterfly throttle of normal type and. a. starting choke complete the instrument. It may be noted that. arrangements for rapid dismounting of the vaporizing chamber are good.
