Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANOTHER post-privatisation reorganisation at National Freight will streamline the management of NFC's activities in Northern Ireland from October 3.

In a move which follows hard on the heels of the restructure of British Road Services into four operating companies (CM, July 23), freight forwarder Lawther and Harvey is being transferred from the Pickfords Group to Northern Ireland Carriers, a subsidiary of the Scottish-based regional group.

Lawther and Harvey, which has been in business for over 125 years and once ran sailing ships, employs 56 workers and has bases at Belfast, Aldergrove Airport, Dublin Airport, and Ballymena.

Its managing director for the last 35 years, Ross Campbell, is retiring early, at 58, to pursue other interests. He is already chairman of the transport training board in Northern Ireland.

NIC managing director George Owens commented last week: "It is logical that the National Freight Consortium's operations in Ireland should be under one management and NIC is pleased to add the forwarding and petroleum distribution activities of Lawther and Harvey to its existing range of transport services."

Lawther and Harvey, which will retain its identity under its new ownership, operates an air freight agency from the two airports, and is agent for shipping and container lines including Ben Line and ACT.

Its oil distribution contract, based at Balleymena, is with Esso, and includes home heating and boiler maintenance work.

NIC is already Northern Ire land agent for Sea Land container line.

This is the inevitable end result of moves which began some years ago with NIC's acquisition of Lawther and Harvey's warehousing and transport activities.
