Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AT one tirrig donkeys were the only means of transport in Clovelly (North Devon), where the main street descends 400 ft. in a few hundred yards and motor vehicles are prohibited. Now, as mentioned above, public service vehicles regularly use the back road to return tourists to the top of the hill.

The service was inaugurated almost 17 years ago. when Clovelly Estates Co. Ltd. first used a Jeep and followed that with a Dodge 4 x 4. Land-Rovers have been used most successfully for the past seven years and at the moment three of these are in service—two on the licensed service (one is petrol driven, one diesel) whilst the third is for the exclusive use of the residents of the Red Lion Hotel for transporting luggage to and from the upper car park.

The passenger service season extends from Easter to mid-October, operating daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, The service uses the back road from the Red Lion to a point within walking distance of the upper car park, the route negotiating a hill half a mile long with narrow, severe bends and a gradient of 1 in 3-1. The tarmac surface is broken up badly in places.

Arthur Ashton and Jack Burrow are the regular drivers. Arthur having been operating the service for almost 15 years. He recalls the early days of the Jeep when gearboxes were being repaired or removed weekly. When the Land-Rovers went into service, springs and shock absorbers gave continual trouble and heavy-duly springs eventually had to be used.

Owing to the continuous low gear work, using fourwheel drive most of the time., clutch life is around 2,000 miles. Brakes are adjusted every 500 miles and are relined generally once during the season. Steering boxes. FEATURE of three articulated ulk powder carriers now entering r with Pickfords Ltd. is that each is fitted wih twin, 10-ton-capacity nium tanks mounted in tandem on emi-trailer frames.

vied by an Atkinson T32 66CT tracmit fitted with a Cummins NH220 r unit, the tanks are to be operated contract to Brown and Polson Ltd.. 3e carriage of bulk cornflour from :hester to Paisley,

signed and manufactured Cnutsen 'and Co. Ltd. tern Link, Worcester, the tanks are equipped 3ressure discharge with aid of fluidizing pads by Edbro hydraulic ig gear which tilts both to an angle of 45*. If -ed. the tanks can be ed for gravity discharge, assisted by the tipping

extrusions, stiffeners following the tank shape being welded at intervals between the sub-frame side members. The tank sub-frames are attached to a 33 ft. 6 in. Crane Fruehauf tandem-axle semi-trailer shod with single tyres.

The complete outfit has a gross train weight of 32 tons.

The tanks are pressurized at 12 p.s.i. by a compressor mounted at the rear of the prime mover behind the cab and p.t.-o.-driven from the five-speed gearbox.

Compressed air is supplied by flexibk piping to a cam-operated, two-way valve located in the centre of the semi-trailer frame. The leading tank is fitted with a flexible discharge pipe ducted to the rear of the vehicle, both tanks discharging through Unicone connections at the rear.

Steel tubes for carrying the discharge hoses are slung along each side of the semi-trailer frame, and pivoted to allow them to be angled away from the chassis frame for githdrawal and replacement.
