On Timber Transport in Australia, The group of pictures which we reproduce on this page gives an excellent idea of the class of work upon which many Leyland vehicles operating in the timber country in Australia are engaged. The vehicle which is the subjot of the illustrations ii fitted with a special winch driven from the front end of the gearbox by means of a sprocket wheel. The drive is taken by means of a silent chain to a special worm reduction gear, and means are provided 'whereby a dog clutch throws the gears in and Out of action..

We understand that tree trunks weighing up to 3 tons have been successfully. raised on to the lorry body by tile method shown in the pictures. The manner in which the two skids are arranged can be clearly seen. One end of the chein which is used to. assist with the loading and unloading 'of the logs is in the form of a bridle which 'is attached to the lorry, whilst the other end of the chain is attached to a wire cable. A snatch block is used to guide the wire round the winding drum, and any slack can readily be taken up by the driver. Other Leyland forries are engaged on similar operations in Australia, and although the work is of an arduous nature they are performing remarkably well.

A Ministry Appointment.
