Taxicabs are now plying for hire in the city of York.

Mr. Edgar Cohen has resigned his position as managing director of the General Motor Cab Co., Ltd. This decision is to take effect from the 14th May next.

In several depots of the large London motorcab companies there are numbers of drivers who never care to take their vehicles out on more than three days of the week.

Henry Ellerington, a driver, who is charged with conspiracy to defraud the General Motor Cab Co. by manipulation of a taximeter, did not appear to his bail of 220 at the adjourned hearing at Lambeth last Tuesday. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The Crawler Again.

Complaints are being made in the columns of " The Times " that the crawling motorcab is becoming a nuisance in the West End, especially in the neighbourhood of Piceadilly. Until quite recently, drivers were satisfied to economize their petrol by waiting for fares on the cab ranks. Competition has forced many of them to take other means to find business. The case of Smith v. General Motor Cab Co., Ltd., which involved the question of the legal status of a taxicab driver who does not receive regular wages, has now been settled in the House of Lords. On Monday last, the Lord Chancellor and others found that the appeal to them must fail, and that the original county-court finding must stand. The relation between proprietor and driver is, therefore, settled to be that of bailor and bailee, but, Dioad third parties, the drivers are deemed to be the servants of the proprietors.

The report and accounts of the Gairta,ge-Bell Motor Cab Co., Ltd., for the period ended the 31st December last, discloses a position which may be regarded as satisfac • tory, having regard to all circumstances. It will be recalled by many readers that the company suffered from initial difficulties, in respect of the passing of its unique cabs and other matters. The total issued capital is 268,231, and there was 235,106 of available cash _at the end of last year. The profit and loss account appears thus:— Gross receipts, 11_2,192 ; discounts, 1223 ; transfer fee.. 26 ; interest on deposit, 1023—total, 213,311. On the other side : Drivers' commission, maintenance charges and running expenses, £8,227; proportion of general expenses (including rent, salaries, etc.), £2,713 ; directors' and auditors' fees, 2768 ; depreciation upon plant, clothing and fixtures, 2299 ; reserve for income tax, £54; balance carried to balance sheet, 11,283—total, 213,344. Preliminary expenses are to be reduced by the balance of 21,283, but it must be remarked that any balance whatever is rendered available only by the charging of 22,920 of general expenses, on the ground that they are of an initial and establishment cha mete r, to capital.

A General Discussion.

On Wednesday of last week, Messrs. Davison Dalziel, Edgar Cohen and G. Pollard were interviewed by a deputation of the members of the London Cabdrivers Trade Union, who were also drivers in the employ of the General Motor Cab Co., Ltd. The matters discussed included the allocation of extras and bonuses on weekly takings, and the duties of instructors in the company's " Knowledge of London" schools.

At a mass meeting held on the same evening by the drivers, it was stated that the Masters' Federation was anxious to meet the drivers in order to discuss the possibility of an increase in cab fares, but the men expressed themselves as extremely averse to any change in the present tariff.

Questions relative to the licensing of vehicles acquired under the hire-purchase system were also before this meeting.

It is understood that the wording of future fare-plates with regard to the charges for extra persons, is to be altered, At present it reads : " For one or more extra persons carried the whole journey." Many drivers state that they have a difficulty in obtaining the extra fares if the extra passengers only travel for a part of the total distance hired.
