hen a piece of officialeking paper arrived on my !sk headed " Circular )ads 36/75" I thought it ight be some welcome :ws about ring roads, of hich we have all too few. Idly, not so; it was simply circular about roads. But it d have a cheering message ' another sort.

It seems the DoE is :tending its Signing of otorway Road Works )urses to cover the signing ' road works on all itegories of road. May its essage spread far and wide. 'ith occasional exceptions, e signposting of motorway ad-ups and diversions and ne closures is in my zperience very well done; indeed it has to be in view the traffic speeds involved; it the signposting of Ilinary roadworks on amble As, Bs and iclassified is more often bad an good. Or perhaps I tould say it shows a lack of iought.

Which surprises me, as ore and more of the guys ho set out the signs and do the digging are now motorists themselves. Yet we have all encountered that just-round-a-blind-corner hole in the road which is marked by a sign that is invisible until you've got round the corner, creating panic stations situations. Equally silly and much more prevalent, though far less dangerous, is the practice of coning off half a busy main road so that pedestrians can walk safely past men repairing a footpath or replacing kerbstones. A little more thought would provide a safe temporary footpath without causing traffic congestion and frustration.
