QTEPS which are being taken under, is-) the auspices of A.R.O. to establish throughout the country machinery for the organization of clearing-house proprietors, were outlined at a wellattended Leeds meeting of representatives of Yorkshire clearing houses, last Friday. An outcome of the meeting was a decision to establish a freight brokers' section of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O.

Mr. J. A. M. Bright, chairman of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., was in the chair. Speakers were Capt. J. W. Jones (Bristol), Mr. H. A. Palmer (London), Mr. M. H. Harris (London) and Mr. Nathan Fine (Manchester), In the course of the speeches the position of clearing houses in general was reviewed, and serious concern was expressed at the complete omission from the Transport Advisory Council's report of any reference to clearing houses.

With reference to the memorandum on the co-ordination of transport, which has been drawn up by the freight brokers' committee of A.R.O., it was stated that this had been approved by the areas and by the executive council, and forwarded to the Minister of Transport, who was considering it.

The freight brokers' committee of A.R.O. was determined to do everything in its power to combat clearing houses of disrepute. In pursuance of the policy of securing organization among clearing houses, it was intended to follow up the Leeds meeting—the first of its kind in the provinces—by similar meetings in all traffic areas. The area organizations to be created would work in close co-operation with each other, and their efforts would be co-ordinated by the national body.

The following were elected to the committee of the Yorkshire freight brokers' section.—Messrs. J. Hutchinson, H. Firth, B. Hutchinson, J. Fielder, and F. J. Archbold. Arrangements are to be made for an early meeting of the -committee.
