THOSE who avoid being run over in Crawley may be indebted to the dedicated Bernice Briggs, chairman of the local road safety committee. She is so devoted to her cause that four times a year she spends £370 to commute 3,000 miles from Kuwait to Sussex to attend council meetings.
She lives in the Gulf State because her husband's job as an average loss adjuster for an international insurance company took them there. Incidentally, he was not the author of the time-honoured notice: "Please adjust your average before leaving."
