GUILDFORD WARNING

• Operators have been warned by the Department of Transport to expect long delays in two months' time on the dual carriageway section of the A3 near the Deerbam Bridge on the Guildford bypass. From early September, this main route for traffic heading for many Channel ferry crossings will be restricted to one lane in each direction.

The first phase of the works — an intensive 16-week programme, which should be completed by the end of December — involves the widening of the road over Deerbarn Bridge from 6 to 7.3 metres.

During the second, sixweek phase of work next spring, the bridge structure will be repaired. According to Roads and Traffic minister, Peter Bottomley, drivers should start their journeys earlier and stagger their travelling times to avoid peak periods. They should also be on the look-out for stationary or slow-moving traffic and be ready to stop.

Warning signs are expected to be erected well in advance of the works, so that commercial vehicle drivers can select alternative routes, including the M3.
