HEATER plugs as used in oil engines are normally of the filament type, and are rather fragile in consequence. A more robust plug forms the subject of patent No. 773,899: (K.L.G. Sparking Plugs Ltd., Putney Vale, London, S.W.15.)
Instead of using a glowing filament, the plug described makes use of a semiconducting material which, when energized at some 2,000 volts, sets up an arcing surface discharge which persists for as long as the current is supplied.:
In the drawing, the plug is shown in position in a pre-combustion chamber (I). The plug consists of two concentric electrodes (2 and 3) with a semiconducting surface between them. A continuous spark is provided by a trembler coil shown diagrammatically at 4. •
