Tyre firm fined after fitter and driver die at roadside. Guy Sheppard reports.

A TYRE COMPANY has been fined £1 0,000 after one of its fitters and the truck driver he was helping were crushed to death on an unlit stretch of dual carriageway.

The men were changing a wheel when another HGV ploughed into the back of the truck. This rammed into the tyre company's recovery vehicle, trapping the men in between.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard that the stranded truck was parked at night on the inside lane of the A90 near Forfar in Scotland in August 2002. Only its hazard lights were flashing to warn oncoming traffic.

Several basic procedures for working in such conditions were ignored, and Ayr-based McConechy's Tyre Service pleaded guilty to breaking Health & Safety at Work regulations.

Procurator fiscal Chris Macintosh says that, although the company had the necessary pro cedures in place, it had no system to check whether they were being followed: "The company said it had been relying on the fact that they had experienced employees who were properly trained, rather than having ongoing monitoring to ensure the procedures were being operated properly." A number of safety procedures were ignored.
