In the crush of going to press with last week's issue, the Business Department inadvertently omitted the C.M.U.A. page announcement. Some owners in the North are unaware of the high average strength of bridges on the Liverpool dock estate. The bridges which are insufficient to carry a load of 12 tons are, generally speaking, unimportant ones, and the quays to which they give access can be, reached by other bridges of ample strength. We have this information officially from the general manager of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, and it confirms our own recollection of the circumstances.

Repair of Bridges.

The Appeal Court heard im

portant ease on the '28th ult. The Sharpness New Docks and Gloucester and Birmingham Navigation Co. was the respondent, whilst the Attorney General (on the relation of the Mayor, etc., of Worcester) was the applicant. The strength of certain bridges across the canal was at issue ; the Act of 1812, under which the bridges were built, specified that they should " from time to time be supported, maintained, and kept in sufficient repair by the said company of proprietors.' r The inclusion of the word " sufficient " appears to have been material to the unanimous decision of the Court to require strength in keeping with the traffic of the present day, and not of the year 1812. We comment on this decision on page 504.
