" IT is manifestly desirable that the

one-man concern should have enough traffic to occupy him ,usefully and enable him to keep his vehicle in proper order, because that is the first step in letting maintenance go—when there is not enough money to pay for it." The Northern Licensing Authority made this observation, last week, when he granted permission to Mr. John Murray, Whitehaven, to carry road and building materials up to 25 miles.

The applicant had previously been restricted within a 15-mile radius for the carriage of general goods, and it was contended that he was losing work from regular customers because of this limit.

The Road Haulage Executive objected, a witness stating that a recession in the haulage of road and building materials had caused the R.H.E.'s Cockermouth depot to be closed and the West Cumberland depot to be only halfemployed.

ROAD-AIR CONTAINER WITH OWN WHEELS

r1A CONTAINER that is suitable for transport either by road or air has been developed by the United States Air Force. Known as the Sky Trailer, it has wide double-folding doors at each end for loading and unloading, and the road-wheel assemblies are detachable. These are placed in position when the container is to be towed along the road and are stowed inside, together with the drawbar, when attached to an aircraft.

The aircraft employed is the Fair' child XC-120 Pack Plane. The doors of the container are opened and fixed before flight to form a V shape fore and aft to lessen wind resistance.

Primarily intended as a means for carrying supplies to forward airstrips, and thence to the front by land, the"containers may also be adapted as hospitals, radar stations, offices or workshops.
