N.J.I.C. Being Undermined?

COVENTRY Corporation's decision %---• to pay its transport operatives higher wages than those nationally agreed is viewed with grave concern by the National Joint Industrial Council for the Road Passenger Transport Industry.

It is understood that all municipal transport undertakings have beeninformed of .a resolution passed by the National Council, stating that Coventry's action contravened the terms of the national agreements arrived at between both sides of the National Council. ." It is felt that such actions strike' at the very foundations of the National Joint Industrial Council and constitute a grave danger to the whole structure of that Council," the resolution stated.

Coventry's decision was taken to end a recent nine-day strike by municipal transport operators. • A letter addressed to the city council by the N.1.1.C. pointed out that in certain other areas, local• discussions were believed to be taking place between transport committees and their employees on matters which, if correctly reported, were not in keeping with the principles underlying the National. Council's agreements. The N.J.I.C. unanimously expressed the hope that fio action in contravention of those principles would be taken as a result of 'these local discussions.

It is understood that a fuller statement is being prepared and will be issued to all constituent bodies of the N.J.I.C.
