Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A DEMONSTRATION at Silverstone I-1. of the Boys Torqelim brake-torque eliminator fitted to an unladen Thames Trader six-wheeled chassis-cab showed very convincingly the effectiveness of this equipment in preventing axle hop with a four-spring bogie. The Torqelim cylinder was mounted for the demonstration, so that it could be connected and disconnected at will, thus it was possible to see in a dramatic way the degree of lift to which the leading axle of the bogie (the driving axle) was subject when the Torqelim was not in action, whilst when the cylinder was connected the vehicle came to rest—in much the same distance, it must be admitted—without any of its wheels leaving the ground at any time.

The Torqelim was introduced at the time of the London Commercial Motor Show last September. The equipment consists of a hydraulic cylinder connected between a chassis-frame crossmember and an arm welded to the front of the trailing-axle tube. The cylinder

D 1 2 contains normal SAE 10 hydraulic oil, and its hydraulic system is quite independent of that of the wheel brakes. Attached to the cylinder there is a small reservoir which acts as a dashpot and eliminates the formation of a vacuum inside the cylinder.

When the wheelbrakes are applied a valve at the upper end of the Torqelim cylinder is closed by hydraulic pressure from the brake line, and this converts the cylinder into a solid torque arm which resists tension but is still free to accept shock-load compression. Thus the turning moment of the trailing-axle tube is resisted, and instead of the axle turning and so, through the suspension balancebeam linkages, causing the driving axle to lift, the relative distance between the chassis frame and the axle tube remains constant; thus the driving wheels cannot hop. Ln other words, the brake-torque reaction becomes a function of the chassis frame rather than of the springs.

When the brakes are not being used

the Torqelim assembly is, of course, the free state. but it still acts as a dam] for the suspension and there is a nod able improvement in the riding qualii of the vehicle which was particula apparent in the case of the Trader s wheeler when driven over some of less-smooth runway surfaces at Silv stone.

The Torqelim is by no means apj cable only to the trailing axle of a bill and it is intended to apply it to corm tional front and rear axles in due cout again with the object of eliminat spring wind-up under braking conditii and so giving more complete wh adhesion. The system may also be fit to private cars and similar light vehicl This equipment has been patented Mr. Godfrey Boys, managing director Henry Boys and Son Ltd., Oxford Str4 Walsall. Staffs. Its cost, when fitted the same time as the Boys third-a

suspension, is £97. J.F.M
