Bill Godwin looks at the George Neville Truck Revolver concept

AN UNUSUAL tipper design — the Revolver concept — by George Neville Truck Equipment, is now in service with Dowsett Engineering Construction of Harrogate.

A rear-tipping body is mounted on a power-operated turntable, slewed to discharge at up to 90 degrees on either side of the "transit" position. This has been fitted to three of the operator's older Ford DT 2417 chassis, selected to provide the required stability.

The Revolvers feed a concreting train which is laying an aircraft apron at Gatwick Airport. The use of conventional vehicles requires special ramps to enable the tipper to back against the receiving hopper of the spreader; these ramps have to be constantly re-aligned.

The new technique has eliminated most of the shunting movements and attendant tyre wear as it is now possible to drive alongside the concreting train, and to slew the body to a position over the receiving hopper and tip the load. The turntable is returned to the travel position on completion of discharge and locked automatically, and the vehicle then moves off.

The Neville design — incorporating some of the engineering philosophy of similar equipment used in the US — was specially dimensioned to meet the requirements laid down by Bob Salt, Dowsett's transport manager. The 9.6cum steel body (approximately 12ft long) has a tophung tailgate and is carried on a 10-in sub-frame incorporating the turntable and underbody tipping ram.

Rotation is powered by a double-acting hydraulic ramand-cable linkage housed in a second sub-frame located on top of the main frame. The body height has to accommodate tipping over the side of the concreting train from the roadway, which may not be the same level. On the other hand, it must not foul the discharge aperture of the batching plant.

The Nummi tipping gear used is Finnish-made and separate controls for slewing and tipping are provided in the cab. The tailgate release and the latch-type locking device, which secures the turntable/body frame in line with the chassis, are operated from the cab. The unladen weight is 8,930kg.

Although the Revolvers have only recently been placed in service, evidence is already accumulating that their introduction is giving a wholly new dimension to more efficient and costeffective tipping operations in circumstances in which even side-tipping vehicles cannot be satisfactorily used.
