Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SCHOOL bus services in rural areas of Lothian may be taken out of Scottish Bus Group hands and given to private bus operators, the region's education chairman has revealed.

Midlothian and West Lothian pupils entitled to free school travel have been issued with bus passes valid only until October, instead for the full academic year.

The council said: "This is because an investigation is taking place, in conjunction with the director of public transport, into the possibility of alternative arrangements being made after that time which would achieve savings.

"The entitlement of these children to continued free travel is in no way affected and arrangements will exist after October for their future travel."

The council has been looking recently at the price of season tickets issued to pupils in some rural areas. It says that some tickets cost £200 a year, and believes it would be cheaper to provide private buses.

The region could save £7,000 a year in Midlothian, and the West Lothian situation has still to be reviewed.

School bus services in East Lothian are already provided by private buses.
