DOWERED by the AV690 engine,

A delivering 192 b.h.p. and 557 lb. ft. torque, a new Dumptruk six-wheeler is announced by A.E.C. Ltd. this week. Designed wholly for the civil engineering industry, the 690 Dumptruk, as it is to be known, will carry a payload, off the road, of 15 tons and has enough power to handle this weight over any sort of terrain. The dimensions of this machine enable it legally to be driven on the highway if so required. Built to withstand intensive shock loadings, the all-bolted chassis has straight channel-section sidemembers 14 in. deep by 1.1g. in. thick and incorporates an internal 0-25-in.-thick flitch plate running the complete length of the most highly stressed part of the frame, rearward of the cab. The tipper body pivot brackets are substantially reinforced by welded gusseting and are designed to give a clear body elevation of 70°.

Much of the credit for the Dumptruk's off-the-road capability must be given to the new two-spring double-drive bogie, using over-slung leaf springs mounted in slipper harnesses, with easily renewable bearing pads. Giving increased ground clearance, allowing 13 in. of diagonal articulation and 11° oscillating movement from the chassis, this unit is positioned by rubber-bushed location arms.

Rear axles with double reduction, spiral bevel, double-helical differential units, have fully floating half-shafts and provide a final drive ratio of 9-04 to 1. An A.E.C. D205 gearbox, unit-mounted with the engine, provides five forward ratios evenly-spaced from 7.17 to 1, in first gear, to direct drive in top gear. To allow for very intensive use and to withstand the very heavy loadings imposed by dumper operating conditions, first and reverse gears are provided with extra wide toothed gear trains mounted , on roller bearings. The gearchange lever is mounted directly on top of the gearbox.

Designed to withstand intensive use, the body, built by Edbro Ltd. to A.E.C. specification, is ,of 10 cu. yd. capacity (struck) and 12 Cu. yd. heaped. The floor is of timber and steel sandwich construction with specially designed corners to assist load shedding.

Taking 13 sec. to reach its maximum tipping angle of 70°, the body is tipped by Edbro twin three-stage hydraulic rams, equipped on the last two stages with dual return action. Hydraulic pressure for the tipping gear is obtained from a swashplate pump driven by a side-mounted p.t.-o, on the gearbox.

S.L.D. Ltd. are the sole concessionaires for the 690 Dumptruk and will be offering the new model through their organization in the U.K. Overseas sales will be handled by A.E.C. Ltd.
