For LGV drivers 2006 was their safest year on the roads for a decade with fewer trucks involved in all types of accident.

According to the Department for Transport's latest road casualty figures, last year 458 LGVs were involved in accidents which led to a fatality, compared with 592 a decade previously. The worst year in recent times was 1999 with 617 fatal accidents.

The number of LGVs involved in any type of accident was also down, from 12,120 in 2005 to 11,336 in 2006. The van accident rate fell, with fatalities down from 299 in 1996 to 274 in 2006. Accidents of all types were down from 19,186 to 15,593.
