• A new Dennis fire appliance model was shown at the Chief Fire Officers' Association and Institute of Fire Engineers' Exhibition held at Torquay this week. It is called the Dennis D Series and it is reported that orders for more than 50 of the model have already been placed.
The chassis follows conventional Dennis construction but the power unit is a Jaguar 4.2-litre petrol engine which, in car use, produces between 245 and 265 bhp at 5,400 rpm according to application. The drive is through a Dennis five-speed constant mesh gearbox which has a power take-off to provide the drive for a Dennis rear-mounted No. 2 600 g.p.m. water pump.
Extensive use has been made of reinforced plastics for the body and at the Torquay exhibition, the Dennis vehicle was fitted with a 400gal plastics tank serving two hose reels for "first-aid" use.
