Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE STEAM WAGONS built by the Yorkshire Commercial Motor Co., at their works at Ilunslet, Leeds, are built well and built to last—as is shown by the fact that some have been in constant service for 16 years, and the only fault with these old stagers is that the running and maintenance costs are now somewhat high. The Yorkshire is in a class by itself, because it is neither an overtype nor an undertype, the two-cylindered compound engine being positioned vertically at the near side of the cab, or to the left of the driver, with its crankshaft across the chassis: On a squared extension. of the crankshaft are carried the three sliding gears, Which engage with other geth carried on the second motion shaft., to which is also secured the driving sprocket of a substantial roller chain, which in turn drives the large chain wheel on the rear axle.

The bevel differential gear is situated within the chain wheel, and is completely .. enclosed by aluminium covers; one of the bevel wheels is fastened to the axle itself, but the other is in one with a sleeve to which the offside rear wheel is bolted.

The horizontal boiler, which is carried across the front of the vehicle, forms one

of the most striking features. It is known as a double-ended loco. type, and is fitted with a circular firebox and uptake, and a, superheater taking tho form of a nest of vertical tubes in the uptake. The tubes at each side of the boiler are duplicated, and each set consists of two types the lower tubes sloping •upwards to the smokebox and the upper tubes horizontally disposed and acting as return tubes to the separate upper portion of the firebox, into which is fitted the funnel. Two powerful independent brakes are provided, a foot brake acting on a drum on the second motion shah, and a screw-down type acting on two drums on the rear axle; the latter is compensated to give.,even braking on each wheel.

There are many points about the Yorkshire wagon which deserve special mention; the boiler, for instance, owing to

its position and construction maintains a water level which is practically unaffected by gradients, so that the tubes are never uncovered. The fireboxes are now pressed complete out of one flat plate, 7-16 in. thick ; the process by which this is done is most remarkable, and the result is more reliable than riveted,or welded work. The tubes are readily accessible for cleaning or for changing or expanding.

Special sheet asbestos lagging, held in position by sheet-steel, has replaced the old wood and asbestos, so that it can be stripped and replaced without requiring renewal. The outer shell of the firebox is now lagged right down.

Careful design is displayed in the engine, which is self-contained in its casmg, and has an intermediate gland between cylinders and oil-bath casing, thuspreventing condensed steam from entering the latter.

Best Yorkshire iron is used for the back axle, which, if bent by accident or overloading, can be straightened without difficulty. The chain wheel is a steel casting and the differential gear and axle sleeve are mild steel forgings cut.from the solid. .Drop-forged mild steel is used for the pistons, which are fitted with two rings, and are remarkably light.

The rear wheels, which are bolted to the rear axle at one side and to the differential sleeve at the other, are provided with gunmetal sleeves so that they cannot become rusted solid with the axle. All the models now have the controls positioned at, the off side, so that the wagon can be driven by one man, and when, for long distance work, it is necessary to have a mate, he need only be a boy to do the firing. Only one vehicle will be exhibited at Olympia; this will be a 4 tonner, with engine-operated patent tipping gear, and three speeds of 4, 8, and 12 m.p.h. The

body of this vehicle measures lO ft. by 6 ft. 6 ins., and the sides and tailboard are 2 ft. high, with additional Loose sides of 9 ins.

The tipping gear is of the run-backand-tip-over type, with a longitudinal, central screw and double arms between the nut and the body. The drive to the, screw is through the medium of a friction clutch controlled from the footplate.
